If shooters pull out the rifle and aim it at a target, the only thing that matters is their goal. The rest of the world fades away. When the thought of winning loads is etched in their heads, their instincts will trigger. The question of whether their time of waking upearly, putting in more hours to training and even sacrificing your favorite foods are worth it in this moment. It is to this moment that 19-year-old Ayushi Podder works hard!
Each time Ayushi is shooting, her aim is much more than the "Bullseye" shot. She is aiming to get an Podium Finish! Every time she presses her finger on the trigger, she shoots the bullet toward her goal of winning an Olympic medal hung on her neck, with the tri-colored flag flying over her.
Aayushi is an aspiring junior rifle shooter and the most recent young sensation in shooting from India to gain prominence in the field, following Manu Bhaker and Gayathri Nthyanadam, Mehuli Ghosh and others. Born on the 23rd day of October in 2000. Aayushi comes from Sheoraphuli, Hooghly of West Bengal.
Aayushi's love and passion for shooting comes directly from her dad Pankaj Podder, who himself is an former Indian shooter as well as an International Shooting Sport Federation ( ISSF) licensed and accredited coach.
Schooling Days And Sacrificed Dreams
Aayushi was totally devoted to studying during her time during her time at Techno Indian Public School. Unexpectedly, although she had been exposed shooting at an early age, she displayed very little or any desire to shoot.
At the age of seven, Aayushi was seven years old, she completed a portfolio with the hope of becoming an actress or model. Aayushi also attended dance classes at a Classical Odisha style and participated in various school activities.
In this time of her life, Pankaj used to travel across states to play in matches. Aayushi did not think that one day she'd follow in his steps. As a scholar who excelled in school, Aayushi wished to study MBBS when she was a teenager.
Start of Shooting Career
Things turned a bit shortly after her father asked her to try shooting. Pankaj confessed to his dream of watching his daughter follow in his steps. "When my child was only five and a half, I had the idea I could make her an shot Olympic champion," the father of two says.
Soon after, she began to train for the sake of her father. Within seven days of acquiring her air rifle Ayushi became a national champion!
"It it was the first time I competed in a time competing but I already was a winner!" she says, her excitement clearly heard in her voice. Her first big win inspired Junior Podder to take up shooting.
With her father's steady support and support, she was never looking back. As the years passed, Aayushi immersed herself into shooting and discovered an exciting new sport to shed blood for. As she demonstrated her determination and enthusiasm in shooting her teachers and principal also began to lend their support to her when she embarked on her new adventure.
To excel in the shooting discipline an athlete requires concentration to the max. For Ayushi the concentration and focus came effortlessly. This is the reason she could get high scores. "I'm excellent at academics. Concentration and focus are essential and these two abilities have helped me shoot quite a bit."
Ayushi also realized the value of perfection in both her sport and everyday life. When she was in the beginning of her practicing, she's father advised her "Ayushi is the only one who can take a best sight picture". These words have been very helpful to her in her international career. They've been incorporated into her head. "Perfection is important," she tells.
After becoming the state champion, Ayushi won the pre-national championship in junior-senior youth the next month. Within an entire calendar year Aayushi has secured her place at the Indian team camp. Soon after, she was selected for the Asian air gun team, and within a year, she won her first gold medal in international competition at the ISSF Junior World Cup 2016, Suhl, Germany.
Indian athletes face challenges Indian athletes
The life of an athlete India isn't as simple. It's true that Ayushi is no exception. The young shooter has plenty of forgotten stories to tell about her travels to different locations to compete in tournaments. One of these stories occurred upon returning from Asian Junior Championship in Doha, Qatar.
Ayushi along with her group arrived at 5 am on the outskirts of New Delhi from a long and exhausting journey. At this point when she finds out that she will be competing in the 11 AM slot for competing in the 50m Rifle 3 Positions event at the All India Inter-University Championship. With a lack of sleep and hunger the young shooter took part in the competition and won the bronze medal.
When she spoke of the situation, Ayushi opened up about the incident without any regret. She is not blaming her diet or sleep deprivation for her loss. She also does not blame ineffective planning of the organizers.
This morning, Aayushi laughs it off. But, this is another item on a lengthy list of organizational and structural issues that athletes have faced and are facing within the sport's ecosystem in India.
In the World Championship in Changwon, Korea, Ayushi had to endure a gap of eight days from the time she arrived until match day. It was not possible to train for the entire eight days due to the scheduling of other games. Additionally, her rifle was not in good condition. This led to a bad experience at the event.
In addition Ayushi's father, as well as her coach were unable to accompany her because of budgetary problems. Another issue facing athletes in India in the present. The athletes are in financial straits to purchase equipment, travel for training, to eat an adequate diet, and so numerous other things.
Balance between shooting and schooling
Despite having to balance academics with shooting lessons and traveling around the world for sporting events, her grade at school was never a drop. After graduating from high school she decided to take an education in Humanities which allowed her to concentrate on her studying and shooting.
Presently, Ayushi Podder is pursuing an undergraduate degree in Public Administration at Punjab University at the same at the same time as she trains and participates in competitions. But, Ayushi believes that it wouldn't have been possible without the help of her college and the management.
Ayushi has no attendance bar because of her participation in the Sports quota. She can exercise all year long and is only required to write examinations. If competitions or selections conflict with her examinations The college schedules specific dates to allow her to take the test.
A one-day in the life Ayushi Podder
As her father did, Ayushi travels a lot. Through all of the time, Ayushi is a participant in at minimum ten competitions in her country. There are also trials for selection, and up at least three International competitions each year. Apart from her travels to various events, she frequently goes to Delhi to practice in Dr Karni Shooting range. Dr Karni Shooting range, since it's the only place that she can train at in the 50m categories.
Ayushi must also travel to Chandigarh for university every day. Between her travels for training, competitions, and college, she's hardly in a position to stay at home.
A typical day for the teenager from West Bengal begins at 5.30 am. She rises, gets fresh up and then has a quick warming-up. At 7.30 am, Aayushi is on the breakfast table. After breakfast, she heads off for her training.
